New School Uniform

Billy and Suzie are modeling the proposed new school uniform. For the boys, the old sweat-shirt has been replaced by a fleece top and the plain polo shirt will now have a dark blue collar and will be worn with cargo style shorts. For girls, the dress has been replaced by culottes and a polo shirt. Black roman sandals will be worn in summer with new slouch style hat. In winter, long socks with black shoes, a long sleeve polo style shirt will be worn and a scarf and beanie will be optional. It will be phased in over a two year period.

Update June 5: The Board of Trustees has accepted the new uniform. They would like to thank all those who have made comments and these were helpful in coming to a decision.

The two year phasing in period will allow the year 5 and 6 children to continue to wear their old uniforms until they leave. The new uniform will be available from the school shop. $$$ Price List $$$

Love it – looks stunning. The culottes is much better for the girls than dresses – especially when playing on climbing frames and see-saws. The dresses looked washed out.

I have some concerns on how warm this will be for winter

Great I say – Out with the old and in with the new. Its just a pity it wasn’t introduced any earlier.

Yeah, looks smart. Like the blue shirt for the girls better than the white. I didn’t really have any problems with the old uniform but I guess the culottes will be better for the girls in that they won’t be having to wear shorts under dresses any more! Don’t know how the boys will like having shorts with long socks in winter – I thought the trackpants were perfect for them however the whole new uniform does look smart.

The boys new uniform looks really smart and much better quality then the current style.

The polar fleece jumpers are a great idea for both boys and girls.

But … the proposed new girl’s uniform looks like the boys. Girl’s like dresses and skirts. Culottes may look good on older girls, but for young girls starting school they are big, ugly and cumbersome. The current summer uniform is light and airy and easy to wash. Having shorts under the girl’s uniform works. The current winter uniform looks smart and is warm.

Roman sandals don’t give much foot support and look ugly! In the current market place there are lots of alternatives for summer school sandals.

I will miss the girls uniforms, they look smart and this speaks volumes for the school image. The new uniform, despite being rather generic, may be more comfortable, functional and warm. Thank you also for considering the impact on the parent’s wallets.

The boys uniform needs smartening up, but the girls uniform is already smart when worn tidely, and provides a point of difference from other schools in the area. The culottes look cumbersome and ugly, especially on the smaller girls, and are fairly generic with other schools which use them in the area. The current girls winter uniform is very smart and tidy – I think the propsed uniform is a real step backwards in this regard for the girls, although it is an improvement in appearance for the boys.
Having every item monogrammed could also make it fairly expensive, especially upgrading all at once – which would have to be done at least every couple of years.

I like the idea of a new uniform. I think that there should still be the choice of trackpants for the winter as some children feel the cold more than others.

Wonderful and about time! The new boys uniform looks “smart”. Our current uniform makes the children look scruffy and sloppy.

I like the current girls uniforms in that they look smart and more school like. The culottes however, maybe more comfortable during play time. The new boys uniforms is a good change.

Looking at costs?? The new uniforms will be the cheaper option. However, should the “go ahead” be given to change, I suggest it be implemented for the start of the new year, 2008.

Having two kids starting in the past 12 months I think this is a wonderful idea, yes the current girls uniform is fine, but if the school is modernising the boys then the girls will want a new uniform too-thats how kids work!, over two years I think it is a realistic timeframe and our kids (a boy and girl) are excited about the new look-the kids will look fantastic, take pride and wear a practical uniform that will last-well done Owairoa.

I am in full support of the new proposed uniform, my children were the models for this and their first comments were about how comfortable and warm it was. As parents we worry about how cold our children are, not them. The tracksuit pants knee and get holes in them far two quickly, they are not cost effective. Having the unisex shirts and polar fleece is a huge advantage with being able to pass down to either sex. Our current uniform looks shabby and is not worn with pride, hopefully a new one will be. Congratulations to the BOT for allowing this proposal to go out to the parents for comment.

Will the general public know which school OPS belongs to? Very similar to OPSM. Is there a any cost in having the entire school name rather than OPS on the side of the shorts.

The new uniform for the boys looks really smart but not sure how warm the shorts will be. However in saying this the current track pants seem to become worn very quickly and end up becoming scruffy with holes in the knees. I am all for the change and hope a decision is made soon as I need to buy new uniforms and there is currently a limited supply while this decision is being made.

I think that Sweatpants in the Winter should be kept for warmths sake. Long shorts have never been appropriate for winter. Other than that it is good.

Boys uniform looks alot smarter. Although as per the other comments above not sure about the warmth factor during the winter time. Some smart pants would do the trick for winter. Trackies are comfortable but do let the “smart” look down abit. Definately a much better look for the boys though.

I hope have the jacket for winter uniform, cos the jumper is not warm enough, thanks!

I agree that the new uniform looks smart, however I am not happy about sending my children to school in winter in shorts. I believe the children need to be warm & comfortable to optimise learning. I think for the boys the sweat pants provided some protection when running around at break time & its warm & practical. I feel also after reading the other comments that maybe our view was not considered when this change was introduced.

I love the uniform but feel that shorts for the winter is to cold. I have my son complaining every morning that his legs is cold. He is wearing his school socks that is used in the winter but it is not warm enough. Maybe a sweat pants or even if they can make long pants that is the same material as the shorts.
